A senior pastor involved in a Canberra church will face the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday, charged with sexual intercourse without consent and multiple acts of indecency.
Police will allege the 53-year-old man used his position within the church to conduct «prayers of deliverance» on members of his congregation, which involved sexual acts.
Police will also allege the man told female members of the congregation they would be cursed and their family members would die if they did not engage in sexual behaviour with him.
Detective Station Sergeant Matt Reynolds said police believed there may be more victims who are yet to come forward.
«This is a particularly sinister crime, where someone appears to have used a position of power for their own sexual gratification,» he said.
«It is distressing to see this type of exploitation still going on in our community.»
Sergeant Reynolds said police believed the man may have committed similar acts in the ACT, NSW and New Zealand and he urged anyone with information to come forward.
