GetUp! to turn election focus on Kevin Andrews’ Melbourne seat

After months of electioneering in Warringah against former prime minister Tony Abbott, GetUp! will on Wednesday announce plans to take on fellow senior Liberal Party conservative Kevin Andrews in his Melbourne electorate.

The announcement marks GetUp!’s first federal election effort in Victoria, a state where Labor is hopeful of lucrative returns on the back of a strong performance at the recent state election. A swathe of Victorian government seats, including Greg Hunt’s Flinders, Kelly O’Dwyer’s Higgins, Alan Tudge’s Aston and Michael Sukkar’s Deakin are all notionally safe seats that are considered up for grabs.

Mr Andrews, the government’s longest continuously serving MP, has held the east Melbourne electorate of Menzies since 1991, and is currently on an 8 per cent two-party preferred margin. He suffered a four point swing against him at the 2016 federal election, but his primary vote has only once fallen below 50 per cent and that was over 20 years ago.

The electorate covers Doncaster, Templestowe and Warrandyte, and borders the electorates of Josh Frydenberg and Julia Banks.
