Ante Milicic already had his thoughts on Sam Kerr’s leadership potential before landing the job as Matildas head coach. He didn’t have to wait beyond his first team meeting with the players for those preconceptions to be confirmed.
First in through the door was Australia’s star striker, who sat front and centre wanting to learn as much as she could from her new mentor. She backed up that enthusiasm on the training ground, demanding more from herself and teammates. Without hesitation, Milicic knew he wanted her to lead the country at the 2019 World Cup in France.
«A few things stood out to me and seeing her in the last three or four days in camp really confirmed my thoughts; she is a leader. She is fearless. She is very important to the team and she is ready at this moment to take this opportunity,» he said.
Kerr’s exploits on the field were of no secret to Milicic but it was her hunger and determination within the camp that he wanted to harness most.
