REAL SCOOP: Video of Karbovanec played at Bacon trial

Former Jamie Bacon associate AB continued his testimony Monday. The most interesting part of the day was when the Crown played video clips of shooting victim Dennis Karbovanec in court describing the incident to police. AB confirmed in his testimony that police had shown him the same video after his arrest for the shooting in 2010.

Here’s my story:

An animated Dennis Karbovanec described in a police interview what happened the night his friends tried to kill him on New Year’s Eve in 2008.

Karbovanec told police in the recorded statement that the would-be hitman, who can only be identified as CD, got out of a stolen white Bronco before leaning back into the other side of the vehicle.

“I can see he’s got his hoodie up over his head and I can see he’s got gloves on too,” Karbovanec said in the interview, parts of which were shown in B.C. Supreme Court on Monday.

“All of a sudden I hear ‘bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang’ — seven more — he unloads them. Misses me everywhere. Then I hear ‘urch,’ and they drive away.”

He said he was left “lying in the f—ing ravine.”

Karbovanec, who survived the shooting with minor injuries, is not expected to be called as a witness at the trial of his former associate Jamie Bacon.

Bacon is charged with one count of counselling someone to commit murder for allegedly ordering the failed hit on Karbovanec.

Another associate of both men, who can only be identified as AB due to a publication ban, has testified that he helped plan the hit on behalf of Bacon and worked with CD to lure Karbovanec to a dead-end road in Mission more than a decade ago.

Also in attendance that night was AB’s drug line worker Eddie “Sanchez” Felix and Matt Johnston, neither of whom knew about the planned hit, AB told jurors and Justice Catherine Wedge.

In one of the video clips played on Monday, Karbovanec named AB, CD and Felix in his police interview about the shooting.

And he said he found a magazine for a .45-calibre gun that had fallen out at the scene.

Karbovanec told police that he figured out that Johnston was likely not involved because he was also left behind after the others fled and also seemed surprised by what happened.

After the shooting, Johnston called out to Karbovanec as he was hiding in the bushes.

“I hear ‘Dennis, Dennis.’ I don’t know who it is this time. I say: ‘Who is it?’ He says: ‘It’s Matt.’ I say: ‘Matt, what the f–k happened? He goes: ‘CD tried to shoot you.’ I go: ‘What the f—, man?’” Karbovanec said.

AB testified Monday that the parts of Karbovanec’s interview played in court were shown to him by police after he was arrested for the shooting in August 2010.

In another clip, Karbovanec said AB called him after the attempted murder.

“My cell phone starts to ring at home. I answer it. I go: ‘You f—ing piece of sh–. You missed, you f—ing goof.’ I hang up the phone,” Karbovanec recounted to police.

“He phones back again. I pick up the phone and go: ‘How dare you, you betraying piece of sh–. I’m your friend and you tried to kill me.’ I’m like: ‘F— you man, I’m alive and you missed.’ I hang up the phone again.”

AB testified about his lengthy criminal history, including convictions for assault and possession for the purpose of trafficking, as well as several breaches of court-ordered conditions.

He also said he beat people “numerous times” without ever being charged, including his own workers on his drug line. Some of the assaults were minor, but some were more serious, including breaking someone’s jaw, slicing open his worker’s bicep with a blade, as well as breaking his nose and giving him two black eyes.

“I am not sure exactly what other kind of damage was done to him,” AB testified.

He also admitted to owning several firearms during his years in the drug trade, including a .40-calibre Glock, an AK-74, an AK-47, a pump-action shotgun, and an SKS .22-calibre long rifle.

The trial continues.
